Useful tool good price

Temperature was a little off but not so much that I wanted to return it - there will definitely be a slight deviation in the production process. Still, I recommend you compare your data to known data so you know if they differ a little or a lot. I've used it several times and find it works well - I recommend it.

The GLASS thermometer comes in a slim case

A review not for the product. This is for delivery. I can't believe they shipped the GLASS thermometer in a fragile envelope and expected it to arrive safe and sound. It was smashed so badly that even the thermometer's packaging was broken. This caused the glass to hit the envelope, which in turn landed on my counter and on the floor.

Tip cracks and breaks easily

I have used this thermometer to make candles at home. The highest temperature I've ever had was 175° when I was using it. As other people have said the tip is flimsy and will break for no apparent reason. I've exceeded the return deadline so unfortunately I can't return it or I would have. You get what you pay for. The photo below shows what happened as the melted candle wax entered the thermometer as a liquid and eventually solidified.

Not good for me, suitable for thermometers and timers

This worked for a few batches of yoghurt (185F) but when I was making toffee (290F) I found that once it had cooled the glass tip was so thin that it cracked. I don't know if the broken glass hit the toffee, but I didn't risk it; Both the thermometer and the toffee ended up in the bin. Also, I didn't like the display; with degrees marked with digits only every 50, and lines for every 5 degrees in between. The thermometer I used for 20 years had digits every 10 degrees and dashes every 2…

Proved accurate

Initially I thought my thermometer was 5°C / 8°F wrong and as the number board is taped to the inner glass tube there is no way to recalibrate it. However, while writing this review I did a little research and it turned out that the thermometer was right and I was wrong; My mistake was thinking that water always boils at 100°C or 212°F, but I've found that this is heavily affected by altitude. In my case, I'm in Guadalajara, Mexico, and my elevation is about 1544 m/5065 ft. So, according to…

Good for home cooking KFC - Frying

We love KFC but wanted to make it ourselves to reduce the fat content and improve the taste a bit. I found a recipe on YouTube (easy to find) and tried it. It tastes great (really good!), but cooking with oil requires a constant temperature. We bought this thermometer a bit worried based on the reviews that it would break easily. We found this helped us keep the oil at a consistent temperature, which promotes even cooking in the pan. We've read that some plastic thermometers melt when attached…

My first candy thermometer

I've been making candy for longer than I can remember. to see what phase he was in). Sorry mom, gone are the days of guessing exactly how long it took for the syrup to be ready. ever since I got my first (and only) candy thermometer. The Polder 510 Glass Candy Thermometer gets the job done. Big. I've used it to temper candy and chocolate. I would give it 5 stars except that the clip sticks it directly to the wall or bottom of the pot which messes up reading. I lost my thermometer while moving…

It exploded when used in frying cannoli shells

I should have taken a photo but was dying to make sure the entire glass was washed as we have multiple animals and didn't want to that they got the splinters in their paws. I was roasting cannoli shells at 375 when they really exploded. I heard it happen, pop, then the thermometer fell off the pot and there was a hole about 1cm near the top. I found two shards of glass on my desk, but a small shard flew across the kitchen onto the floor. Upon reflection, I came to the conclusion that this…
