Don't believe everything you read on the internet.

The description says it widens to 2 1/2 inches, most likely barely 2 1/4 inches. If you need 2 1/2 inches, 2 1/4 inches won't work. Sigh. A bit disappointed with the product description but overall this is a good tool to have in your toolbox.

Pros
  • For expanding exhaust pipes, rounding pipe ends and removing grooves on exhaust clamps. Used from 1-1/2" to 2-7/16" ID. Exhaust Pipe
Cons
  • Some Cons

The dimensions appear to be a little off.

I bought this to use with a 1-1/4” OD thin wall mower exhaust. It just barely fits. Disappointing to say the least. I'll hire a torch and see if I can get the pipe hot enough to soften it and clog the expander. What a hassle. Size aside, the product otherwise looks decent and the rubber rings don't feel very durable and may not last long.

Pros
  • Exhaust flare and flare to allow another pipe to be inserted
Cons
  • Not all will fit

Poor second try (with a 100 ft/lb percussion gun)

Product does not do the job it was designed for. The first problem is that it's cast and the parts that are supposed to push the tube out will break. On first use (with a 3/4" socket on a 1/2" ratchet) the tool broke in 2 places. Since the job was urgent, I went to Autozone and bought another one (different brand but the same). The second attempt was worse (using a 100 ft/lb Impact Gun), 2 more breaks and finally the nut came loose before I could make a 1/8" extension on the stock exhaust. The…

Pros
  • Straightens dents, bends in exhaust pipes and mufflers without damaging pipes or mufflers
Cons
  • Good but not great

A little reengineering makes this tool worthwhile.

Bought this expander despite mixed reviews. Many people report that removing threads makes the tool unusable. To avoid this, I disassembled the tool before using it and oiled the threads and the sliding surfaces. My threads broke the first time I used it. Luckily the threads on the long center screw were fine. The nut's thread succumbed. I was fortunate to have a spare class 8 nut on hand - 1/2 inch x 20 tpi. A perfect replacement for the one that came with the tool. With my replacement part…

Pros
  • Strong steel construction for strength and durability
Cons
  • Negative gift
