Ideal for cutting XPS foam and other foam products

Ideal for cutting XPS foam and other foam products. Much easier and more convenient than using an office knife. If you work with foam a lot (let's say you create terrain for RPGs or tabletop wargames), this is a valuable tool and well worth the money. Two points of criticism: The height of the wire is unfortunately just under 15 cm, which means that it is not possible to indent properly with large parts (e.g. a 6" x 6" grid). In addition, the protective hood can wobble and move when force is…

Ok with a few problems

Nice little knife. I think it just needs a slightly heavier wire as it will bend unless I move REALLY slowly. Also, I would advise them to add some small holes for the diameter pins to be inserted. Using a pencil with tape didn't work very well so I drilled a few small holes in the table and inserted some wire. Much better but it would be nice if they were pre-drilled as we don't really know what's under the table and they could probably make it more accurate. almost immediately. You can then…

Great Tool.: Wire Cutters

I'm a hobbyist when it comes to using both hot wire cutters and other benchtop tools. But even the simple things you can do with Proxxon are amazing. I can mass produce bricks of the same size, cut styrofoam sheets to the right width, cut round circles fairly convincingly and much more. The biggest downside I will name is the fence/rail that comes with it. It works, but it's very short and needs some sort of fastening on the opposite side or it will wobble from uneven cuts. I made my own It's…

Great for Pelican cases

I used it to carve rifle cartridges with the Pelican 1750 foam case (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000AOMA1S/ ref=wms_ohs_product?ie=UTF8&psc=1). I love being able to control the temperature and as you'll find if you keep the heat high, the wire cuts too quickly and you get jagged cuts. Reduce the temperature to 4-5°C and it will cut slowly enough to get nice, smooth, straight cuts. Also, the price of this product was a bit higher than expected, rather poor quality. I'm deducting a star for

The best desktop foam cutter online.

I was looking for a foam desk comparable to the industrial model available at my university. While not close, this is the best foam cutting table I've found online without having to build your own hot wire cutting rig. I bought this as a tool for cutting Foamula (polystyrene) foam 2 inches thick. I've been able to make hundreds of cuts in thick material with minimal problems. I have finished the project but there is still some wire left on the spool. Complaints: The wire breaks very randomly…

Like a band saw for foam.

Thing is great for cutting foam. I made special travel cases for my guns (the foam that came with the case allowed the magazines to slide into the firearms). I ordered heavier foam (just for the bottom of the case, left the egg crate on top as the bottom foam cutouts hold everything in place and the top just pushes against it), made templates out of poster board and cut out. I'm picky, so I made "die cuts" by threading the cutting wire through the foam with a sewing needle and then reattaching…

Good choice but flaws

HONEST UNQUESTIONED REVIEW. In the world of hot wire cutters, the Proxxon is the most versatile hot wire cutter (but only as an affordable accessory you have to pay even more for!) Sophisticated but very reasonable concerns): 1) ambiguous if not poor assembly instructions, 2) wire spool configuration and wire installation are idiotic and design flaws, and 3) the prepackaging is done in a way that causes confusion and frustration to the consumer the stop is a piece of junk once you get rid of…

Pros
  • Alu Cobond worktop for easy pushing of work pieces
Cons
  • Drill packaging

Good for what it can do, but limited in use.

Not a bad product. It's easy to set up and works exactly as promised. The three stars are to mark this rating for people who might think it would work for something other than the small hobby items it seems suited to. It cuts through foam really well. It heats up immediately. But it also means it will cut your foam as smooth as you can run it through the wire. If you have an unsteady hand or just stop for a moment, you'll be left with jagged edges that need to be sanded down when working with…
