Simple and effective

It's so easy to use even though it costs more than I wanted; I hope this is the only one I will ever buy because of its quality. This will help me evaluate a WHO hand sanitizer recipe to ensure an alcohol content of at least 60% and above. I tried testing this with plain water, vodka, and other liquids first and it worked great!

Pros
  • Check, measure and check
Cons
  • High price

The measurement of the alcohol content is very imprecise.

The product does not accurately measure alcohol content. Before fermentation begins, the grape must is measured at 25.0 Brix (both with a refractometer and with an areometer). This implies a potential alcohol content at the end of fermentation of around 14%. The alcohol refractometer shows 21 to 22%, which is impossible. The refractometer is also not easy to read and it takes some practice to get the reading right.

Pros
  • Substance analyzer
Cons
  • Expensive

Testing Disinfectants in Refractometers

I bought this product to test the final concentration of alcohol in some home made disinfectants. I followed the WHO recipe for a hand sanitizer that contains 99.8% isopropyl alcohol. I didn't dilute the sanitizer because the alcohol felt like it was almost 100% and when I checked it with distilled water (0%) after calibration, it was over the top. After dilution you should end up with hand sanitizer in the 80% range so I know the alcohol percentage in isopropyl alcohol was accurate and that…

Pros
  • Refractometer
Cons
  • Dear
