Can a 30-year-old techie who loves Miyazaki movies and LEGOs of the past get an unexpected and valuable gift? Yes, and that's it. All solid plywood, laser cut for precision and like the best LEGOs, difficult to build, creatively designed (lots of internal mechanics) and fun to put together. The ROKR line is worth the money. Note that the marble track benefits from rail bonding to ensure alignment, otherwise they are all well designed to fit just thrust pieces.

I made three. Motor, airship and moon rover. They are of high quality. The laser cut parts require some pressure to pop out and they need to be sanded down afterwards. I have the manual dexterity required to handle parts that need fitting. I also found that a bit of wax makes assembly easier. On an airship, getting the spars through the fuselage was particularly difficult and time consuming. Any kit that involves gears meshing requires patience and careful assembly. It was a lot of fun to collect. I was disappointed that it took me almost a year to assemble it. Every detail emerged light and intact. However, there were a few parts that didn't fit properly. Some are easy to fix with a simple sanding, others just need glue, some I can handle. I've become a fan of these steampunk 3D wooden puzzles. I stay up all night until they get together. However, I had trouble keeping the top and bottom from falling apart because you dared to glue them together. So I found a way to keep it neatly together by joining the top and bottom together separately. I used a zipper and string to hold everything together. ROKR instructions are easier to follow and parts are easier to put together (sometimes getting tabs in a hole can be a real chore with UGear). When Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin invented the rigid, lighter-than-air ship named after him, he had no idea that this aircraft would be immortalized on the cover of MAD Magazine. MAD used the boat as a passenger gondola suspended from the airship. They were small and puny compared to the large water and land vehicles in this set.
