Royal is not liable for an expensive device that lasted a little longer than the warranty period. Recently, it started working continuously after inserting paper into the slot. It restarts when we unplug it and plug it back in, only to do the same thing over and over again. We have cleaned the shredder and fully tested it. I originally gave two stars because it actually shredded paper - once you managed to get the paper into the shredder. It is a challenge. Its design is terrible. Getting paper into the cutter heads is a huge pain. The design appears to have come from lawyers who are more concerned with potential risks than someone who actually shreds paper. This unit the Royal 1840MX replaced an old Royal 160MX very similar to this one but Royal stopped selling gears for it so I could' fix it it might not be the third time in 10 years. So in the end it lasted a long time, but only because I changed gears in it twice in so many years. Changing gears is one of the main reasons I bought this 1840 because when I checked the Royal website they sell replacement gears for the 1840MX. Hopefully they will still sell them if this device fails in the future.
