Description of 🌱 Stable Porous Natural Planted Aquarium Substrate: Seachem Flourite Black Clay Gravel - 15.4 lbs

GRAVEL: Seachem Flourite Black is a specially fracted stable porous clay gravel for the natural planted aquarium. Its appearance is best suited to planted aquaria, but may be used in any freshwater aquarium environment. AQUARIUM BED: Gravel modifiers such as laterite are not necessary when using Seachem Flourite Black as this product is most effective when used alone as an integral substrate bed, but it may be mixed with other gravels. SET-UP: When adding water to the aquarium, fill slowly to avoid disturbing Flourite Black substrate bed. Place a bowl in the aquarium and add water directly to the bowl, allowing water to overflow softly on to the gravel bed. Initial cloudiness is normal, but to remove this simply use mechanical filtration. COMPATIBLE: Flourite Black substrates will work fine with an under gravel filter and will not soften or decompose to an unsuitable state within your tank.Flourite substrates will work fine with an UGF. SAFETY: Seachem Flourite Black is not chemically coated or treated, thus does not alter the pH of the water. Flourite Black is beneficial for the life of the aquarium and need not be replaced.

Great substrate for a newly started aquarium

I've had this in my planted aquarium for a few months now. This was the first gravel I used for this tank. There was a huge amount of dust, although it was washed out before being installed as the first layer of tanks. Come on but after the dust settled four days after the tank was full and the filters were active it was a great substrate. I wouldn't recommend adding this gravel to an already running tank due to the amount of dust, but when you start a new tank my plants have really taken root…

Prefer UNS Controsoil to Seachem Flourite

I have used several substrates designed for planted aquariums and Flourite is definitely my least favorite. Even after rinsing, foam remained on the aquarium glass and a cloudy cloud at the bottom of the aquarium. I ended up draining all the water and rinsing the Flourite again and a few days later there is still residue. I prefer LOTS of Controsoil by Ultum Nature System (see 2nd photo) which does not require rinsing, has minimal haze and retains a rich black tint after immersion in water. All

Pros
  • Highly rated by testers for hold and durability
Cons
  • Something different

Dramatically changed water values

Black fluorite is doing very well in the aquarium. However, I have used it for a freshwater aquarium and have not been able to stabilize the carbonate hardness or KH. I keep freshwater shrimp. I use reverse osmosis water and salted shrimp to make 200 TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) remineralized water. I worked very hard but after three months and advice from SKF Aquatics I gave up and replaced it with an inert substrate. I had bloody mary neocardina shrimp. I bought two bags and even kept one bag

Fluffy and dirty, excellent base but requires little effort

Fluffy and dirty, excellent base but requires little effort. I used four bags to start a heavily planted 24 gallon cubic tank. I bought a 5 gallon ($2) plastic bucket and drilled many small holes in the bottom. Put two bags in a bucket and put a hose on top, shaking it regularly. After about 10 minutes of whipping and rinsing, everything became clear. Poured it over the plastic on the picnic table in the sun, raking it from time to time to expose the damp material, and bucket cleaned the other…

FYI: It's not black sand, it's clay gravel.

At first I got mad because I looked in vain at the picture that said "Flourite Black Sand" and when I received it I poured it into the tank without hesitation. My fault for not taking a closer look. Well I have fluorite sand and they are all kosher. Clay gravel and sand look great! However, gravel and sand release a crappy amount of clay dust into the water, like a nuclear winter hatch. milky ripples in the water with a jet from a canister filter. This is normal and I think the dissolved dust…

Dead easy! - Aquarium Substrate

After reading the reviews and studying this product for several weeks, I realized that the most important thing is not to wash the living shit out of it, but to cure it under the sun. And I did, spending less than 15 minutes total lifting my three bags and ending up with a great tank with no clouds. I filled a 5 gallon bucket halfway and poured one of the bags into it. As you can see from the photos, the resulting slime is not something you would NEVER, EVER, EVER add to an existing or new…

Pros
  • New
Cons
  • Slightly Torn

Almost all of the bad reviews associated with this product are related to how dirty it gets your water. There is a simple solution. Within 24 hours of filling my new tank with unwashed Flourite Black, the tank was crystal clear. Open bag and pour directly into an empty aquarium. Place all stones, furnishings, decorations and plants before filling. When it's time to fill up the tank, you can't just stick the hose at full blast or dump buckets of water in it. Instead, pour the water from the hose

Pros
  • Everything is fine!
Cons
  • Expensive

Great Product: Aquarium Substrate

I've had no problems with cloudy water. Not sure if I'm having any luck, but I bought 3 bags (but only used 2) in a 29 gallon tank. If it helps anyone, I worked with one pocket at a time and did the following: 1) Drill 2 dozen 3/16" holes in an area of the lid, mostly near the edge. (Any size smaller than most fluorites. Also, more holes would probably make it faster, and fewer might not be a problem. I just drilled holes until I felt I had enough.) 2) I have Pour 2 gallons of tap water into a…
