AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

I received the first drive in the summer of 2016 and tested it with Seagate Seatools before using it. He collapsed immediately. Got a second drive (swapped) and used it for a year and a month with very little use. Never dropped, traveled or hit. The second disk is now FAIL. Says return under guarantee. See fig. I have 2 WD external drives that are older and have never failed. With over 100 different hard drive brands in the last 20 years, this Seagate external hard drive gives clear indications

Good for backups, bad for general use

Seagate does everyone a disservice by promoting this drive as the standard desktop expansion drive. It's not like this. The drive in this drive is a Seagate backup drive. It is designed for long-term data archiving and is said to spend most of its time in standby mode. Any operation other than sequential reads is slow. It doesn't matter much for backups, but it doesn't do very well for general use as an expansion drive. Disconnect this drive from your computer when not in use to ensure it…

Pros
  • Durable finish
Cons
  • Almost never

Good electronics

This has been my first try at Seagate (mainly the HGST type) in a long time. Inside this case is a Seagate Archive hard drive, which the OEM sells for $249. So at $179 it's a steal. (Read more about the backup drive on the Seagates website) The USB 3.0 interface was fast. Tested blank drives formatted in HFS and ExFAT showed consistent read/write speeds of 180-190MB per second. After the hard disk was 90% full, large files reached a maximum reading and writing speed of 100MB/s, smaller files…

Pros
  • Easy to read control panel
Cons
  • So-so
