If your boat/canoe is not very light, this unit may be difficult to operate. When the boat is on the roof with foam blocks and straps tightened, it provides a very stable and secure support. The center strap that came with it was too short and I had to improvise and use a similar, longer strap that I already had.

We bought a canoe kit to work with our existing luggage rack on our Jeep Laredo but the foam blocks weren't high enough to work. We kept the kit as the brackets are good quality and thought we could use the foam blocks another time on a car without a trunk. I would recommend comparing the blocks to what you have before relying on the "Universal" name.

We used it for a several hour ride. It worked well on the trunk of a Subaru. It has a textured non-slip surface glued to the bottom. Two such strips are glued to the bottom of each foam block, 8 in total. One came loose on first use. Two more begin to unravel. There are small stains on the foam. I think it will be fine in the long run, but the textured stripes glued to the bottom might not hold up for a lot of rides. Let's hope the foam blocks can do without them.

This kit has everything you need to attach a canoe to a car and does the job perfectly. My only issue is the straps for attaching the front and back of the boat. Like most straps, the included straps come in 2 pieces, one with a hook on one end and a clamping mechanism on the other end, and the other with a hook on one end and a loose end.
