Poor quality stainless steel rusts

After a ride, the strut starts to rust. If the rust gets too bad I'll probably replace this with an aluminum version. At least it doesn't foul the deck when it corrodes and it's cheaper to replace.

Pros
  • practical item
Cons
  • Good but not great

Works with Racor filter, very durable construction.

Works great with the Racor filter I bought. It is heavy and a larger mounting plate could have been used. Make sure you install it on a solid surface. If your fiberglass is flimsy, add a piece of seaboard to install.

Pros
  • This is amazing
Cons
  • Speed

Very durable and beautifully built. A big step up.

Very strong and nice construction. A big improvement over the aluminum mounts (which I removed because they were completely rusted and rotted). I installed them on my boat, time will tell the quality of this material and rust resistance.

Pros
  • Nice packaging
Cons
  • unreliable

Quality part, couldn't be better IMO

I have had this filter mount installed on my Whaler since 2016. As of 05/2020 there is very slight discoloration or surface corrosion. It's very light, probably easy to take off, but light enough that I don't mind. My whaling ship is 30 years old and I expect this shackle will last many, many seasons, well ahead of me. I used to only get 2 or 3 seasons of cast aluminum filter mounts.

Pros
  • Fits me great
Cons
  • Band

This part could be stainless steel but if so its VERY poor quality as shipped within 1 week in a marine environment, the head is covered with rust and oxidation. By the way, the brass candles are fine, but the "stainless” head is covered with rust. I expect to have to replace it, but I just can't justify taking it off the boat after going to all the trouble of replacing it in the first place. I am extremely disappointed.

Pros
  • Easy to read control panel
Cons
  • Frequency

Solving the rust problem with stainless steel

I was fed up with the horrible corrosion associated with die cast aluminum cases but was concerned when I read the reviews of this stainless steel model and realized that it will rust even in marine environments. But I think I found a solution. I bought a zinc rod (also from Revain: Martyr Bombardier Johnson/Envinrude Anode Power Trim and Tilt Models Martyr Bombardier Johnson/Envinrude Anode Power Trim and Tilt Models) for about $10. I used a grinder to smooth out the casting marks on the anode

Pros
  • Few competitors
Cons
  • There are downsides
