8-Gauge Skutt Kiln Thermocouple Type K Replacement Part - SK1515 Review

This is a newer improved version of scutt. I installed by enlarging the hole with a 1/2" wood drill bit, the oven walls are very soft, and I turned the drill bit by hand. Easy to plug in and my first shot went great. The old thermostat I replaced worked 1-2 cones higher, this one was spot on.

A cheap replacement for a thermocouple that was too short for an oven, after adding an outer insulating coating to increase heat. Mediocre quality, the ceramic parts are very fragile and weak so a bit delicate installation without damaging the ceramic insulators. Tested temperature accuracy, it's within 5°F of my other two thermocouples at 2000°F.

The thermocouple was shipped with the wrong label. The red dot indicating a negative result was on the wrong side. I accidentally swapped wires instead of flipping the thermocouple. Creating a very dangerous situation. The oven burned out and luckily I spoke to Skutt on the phone and they advised me to turn off the oven immediately. My mistake, but if it had been marked correctly there would be no problem. Check with magnet first!

Type N has a lower output voltage, at 2000F the difference is several 100 degrees. It reads lower, so the oven is getting hotter. If your oven is set to Type N, it will work normally. If you need Type K, look elsewhere. Other manufacturers make the same mistake. I think a manufacturer made a bunch and it's probably not clear what they shipped. It looks the same, but it isn't. I changed my settings to Type N. It works fine now.

I can't trust the digital part of a very expensive oven. The temperature I set is usually high enough to ruin pottery and shelves. I have to use control cones throughout the kiln and be present throughout the kiln to keep an eye on what is happening. Then when it automatically starts to hold normal I have to go down the cone and hold the temperature manually and I can't trust what it's telling me. No slow cooling, no ease of use. I paid $5,000 for a manual oven

I figured I would have to buy a new stove or send it back to Skutt or find someone to fix my stove. My oven error code was a thermocouple, so I decided to try it myself for less than $25 a part, with instructions, Phillips screwdriver and less than 10 minutes of my time, repaired! Works great, saved me a huge headache and a lot of dollars. I recommend this seller and will buy from him again if needed 👍

I'm a high school art teacher and my oven worked great until the last week of semester when it decided to stop because I needed to replace this part.
