This is brass. It's not steel.

I like to use brass screws with heads showing on furniture or walls. I bought them with the same idea. But brass is a soft metal and you can't challenge smaller diameter screws like diameter 4. Although I pre-drilled the pilot holes with a Makita countersink, 2 out of 5 of my screws broke when trying to connect the wood carpet protector to the sub-floor. . It was necessary to use a larger diameter screw or other metal.

So I'm making a keepsake box for a family member and need smaller screws so I don't split the wood. The size was large HOWEVER I hand tightened it with a screwdriver to avoid removing it with a drill. But I was sooo wrong. Not only did it rip the head off after a few turns, but I tried again very slowly with a small drill bit and it didn't come loose, just the screw CRACKED IN HALF AT ANY MAXIMUM PRESSURE. Half of the screws are now in the pre-drilled holes. I don't know if I received a bad…
