The lid is sealed with a rubber seal to keep drinks fresh. I like the jug because it has straight vertical sides - ie. It fits in the fridge without wasting space. I poured in hot tea from the stove and put it in the fridge - no problems (I've read reviews that it seems to break when the temperature drops).
