I swapped contacts in my distributor and couldn't get the car up to speed. Eventually, I traced the problem back to the lag, which decreased as the RPM increased. The likely cause of this symptom is that the contacts are not closing fast enough at higher RPMs due to insufficient spring pressure or some other problem.
