I agree with the other reviews, it is a manufacturing defect.

Like other comments on the review, mine came in a bubble mail box in an open box in a plastic sleeve. Upon examination, there were a few scratches along the ruler and quite a few scratches on the ends of the ruler unrelated to the ruler adjustment process. Running a simple line test showed that the tool worked accurately and accurately. The real disappointment was that the ruler's finish was HORRIBLE, the chrome was missing in large areas on both sides of the ruler as if it had been somehowโ€ฆ

One of the best tools I've seen

I'm a big tool collector and user and this tool is one of the best. I've used a lot of Empire and Stanley combination squares, and I also have an old Starrett, but this tool is in a league of its own. The edges are perfectly crisp, movement and locking are precise and positive, and the finish and markings are just beautiful to look at and feel. Often when you're building quality stuff, starting with a square or 45 degrees is the baseline, and you just can't do that consistently with a cheapโ€ฆ

This is a great American tool, however.

Okay, that's a rewrite. I initially gave a 1 star rating and started a tirade about the tool and how it is made in China and not square etc. Firstly, THIS TOOL IS MADE IN THE USA. Atol Massa to be exact. No, it doesn't say "Made in USA" anywhere, which still annoys me. But I called Starrett and spoke to a nice person who explained to me that they no longer have this rule because consumers from other countries don't like it. I don't like it, I understand (probably), but I don't like it. It alsoโ€ฆ

The basis of all clean and precise work

In science, one quickly learns that errors accumulate geometrically, not linearly. Perhaps that's why I didn't feel any buyer's remorse for paying the price for a real Starret square. Now I have the assurance that whenever I hit a line or trim an edge, it's always true. I threw away all my crappy Stanley squares (not before comparing them to Starrett and realizing that they were all a bit uneven and with imprecise straight edges) and now all of my marks suddenly line up when I draw lines due to

Worth it when you need it

True, it costs ten times more than my Stanley Square but ten times better. I'm a professional carpenter and I realized that the only tool I used all the time that wasn't professional was my angle so I decided to take the plunge and I'm glad I did. I'm also very, very active in supporting US manufacturing (although some Starrett products are now made overseas). Aside from the much easier to read numbers and weight, the biggest difference between this and my cheap combo square is the ruler. lockโ€ฆ

Exceptional quality, but is it really worth it?

I bought a Starrett C33H-12-4Ry Combo Square ($113) along with an Empire Level E250 ($15.94) for comparison. As far as I can tell, both are perfectly square. Both are made in the USA, but the Starrett looks heavier and more robust. (It weighs slightly more: 13.875 ounces vs. 11.5 ounces). Starrett's vial only has a small window, making it difficult to "read". In contrast, the Empire E250's bladder is fully open and visible from every angle, although this makes it more vulnerable to potentialโ€ฆ
