Haven't tried making buns yet. We used them to increase the area to hold up the long hair instead of winding the hair into a bun. We tied a regular hair tie around the hair to tie it together and keep it in place, then we placed it over and decorated the hair. There is no particular stretch or hold. I suspect you'll need to use a regular hair tie to hold the hair in place.

I like that there are three different sizes in the pack so I can create a variety of styles without looking like I just walked out of the Bibbity Bobbity Boutique at Disneyland ( I was concerned since they use similar donuts for their styles), but the smaller size allowed for a more sophisticated look. My hair is actually longer than my shoulders. This product is not easy to use. You place your hair in a pony holder (not included), then place a donut-shaped net over your hair and twist it. The hair doesn't cover the mesh at all - just a small section of it. Impossible to cover and very difficult to try as you can't see it and how you move each strand of hair to try to cover the mesh without pulling on the strands or sagging. Too disappointing.

I used to use an old sock that was rolled into a donut to make a bun. It was difficult to use and cumbersome. I love this product. I have long but very thin hair and have always wanted a big bun. I bought 3 packs because I didn't know what size I needed and found the medium one worked best for my hair. For a big one, you'll probably need more or thicker hair to fill it out completely. I had a friend show me how to roll it and it seems a lot harder than it really is. Works great. I have muddy water blonde hair and prefer this brown over lighter colors. My hair is medium to medium length. The large bun machine is slightly oversized to be useful. The middle one just fits. Oddly, I end up with a bun of about the same size when I use a small one.
