Tried two different cards both with problems

First I tried this adapter with Sandisk Extreme 32GB on my Dell Inspiron 700m with XP. The card was very fast. However, many programs did not load. When I deleted files, they didn't end up in the recycle bin, they just got deleted. When I tried to save the files they didn't show up and had errors on the drive I was trying to save them to. Then I tried the Verbatim 4GB card. It offers better performance but is very slow and, unlike Sandisk, is recognized as an internal drive rather than an…

Job not guaranteed.

Doesn't work in my case. I took a calculated risk trying to upgrade an old Sony Vaio laptop, but it didn't work. The BIOS recognizes the card as a removable disk and refuses to boot from it, period. I even cloned the original partition from the mechanical hard drive and played the master boot record. Bad luck. It's not that the device doesn't work, but how they do the IDE emulation is different than full-size CF to IDE adapters. It identifies itself as a card reader and your laptop is either…

Pros
  • Everything is fine!
Cons
  • Expensive insurance

I was restoring an old Compaq Contura Aero 3/44c. The original drive used a very unusual screw arrangement (both side and bottom holes face the center of the drive!). This hull didn't match. I ended up desoldering the 20th pin and removing the hole for a cleaner look (although I didn't have to as the system I was using didn't have a connector for the 20th pin). but it helps you to orientate yourself! It was easy to find, pin 19 (on the bare board) is soldered to the center of a tiny X-shaped…

Exactly what I wanted, but there is a small problem.

This is a pretty good product that worked well enough for an old laptop I picked up and was exactly what I was looking for. There weren't any real problems except for one. While the screw holes lined up correctly with the drive bay bracket, they were too far forward, resulting in the adapter housing being too far back for the IDE pins to make the connection. My solution was to not use screws and use tape to attach the case to the bracket. Otherwise it works fine. Couldn't use a slave card but…

So far, so good. gave the old laptop a big leg of speed!

So far I like this device. Installed it on a very old laptop with a bad hard drive. I didn't have to bend or break any of the pins like others seem to have done, I simply replaced the failed hard drive with these and then installed Win Me on it. However, be aware that most likely any CF card you use will need to be partitioned first or attempting to install Win will throw an error. Once it's partitioned, Win will ask you to format it and you're done. I can't yet say how this setup will work in…

YMMV with different CF cards.

Build quality is terrible. The case arrived with 2 loose screws in the box. All 4 screws holding the case together had snapped off. I had to use duct tape to hold the case together. As other reviewers have pointed out, I had to break one of the pins on the connector to connect it. It's not a big deal, but you can damage the circuit board in the process if you're not careful. recommended by Revain, didn't work on my old Micron laptop. I cloned the original laptop hard drive to SanDisk using…

Check jumper pads are good for memory cards

Bought for an older Archos Jukebox 15 (2002 music player), just wanted to play with it. The form factor is ideal, as the rigidity of many Archos laptops is based on a 2.5-inch hard drive, so simpler, more compact solutions just don't cut it. Used a Micro SDHC to CF card and a 32GB SDHC card and the combination worked. One issue with this: I initially had trouble with the music player recognizing the device, resulting in it not launching. I opened it up and found that the jumper pads were…
