Great for Mac Time Machine Backup and Media Delivery

I once had an Apple Time Capsule for Mac Time Machine Backup. Then Apple went out of business and I started looking for a replacement. First, I set up an old MacBook Pro as a server. This worked well, but had a few downsides: My office was a mess (Mac and external hard drive). It didn't have a RAID disk for data redundancy. And all of the setup had to be done through the MacBook Pro. That means hiding it in a closet was impractical. To solve these problems, I decided to try Synology DS720+ NAS.

Pros
  • A Dream Come True
Cons
  • Requires an outlet

Returned immediately

My experience with the Synology 2 NAS DiskStation DS220+ was short-lived. Aside from reporting that it was inherently corrupted in some way, this turned out to be more complicated than I had suspected, as it's a hardware component of a proprietary network operating system, itself part of a diversified digital ecology. who knew The installation brochure does not say much about this and suggests installing separately available drives in the device. DS220+ is a really cool NAS!

I read a lot of reviews and decided to buy Seagate IronWolf Pro 2-Bay 4TB Hard Drives. I chose the Pro drives because: 1) not much larger than the standard IronWolf NAS quality; 2) 7200 rpm, not 5200 rpm - speed counts. For my use, I found the standard 2GB of DDR4 RAM to be sufficient. It can go up to 6GB, but I don't know who sells 6GB DDR4 RAM. Sure, a 4GB DDR4 RAM stick costs $20, but I skipped it. I'm still getting 980Mbps transmission through the 1Gbps LAN switch (see below for more…

  • Great for me

Very easy to set up and use

It was very easy to set up and use. I bought it to store CCTV footage as well as backups. I was tempted to return the mini PC I bought to support other functions when I found out the functions were built into the NAS. Definitely recommend the memory upgrade. Waiting for the NVME pair to see how much performance increases. The observation station looks great and is easy to use. Please note that the NAS comes with 2 cameras. If you have more, you need to purchase additional monitoring licenses…

Pros
  • Best in its niche
Cons
  • I have no particular complaints about it, everything is fine

Good little NAS best in Devices

I usually build my own systems but this one (DS920+) was a lot cheaper to fix things this size than building new ones (used ones can vary a lot). The only thing I would have wished for was 10Gb ethernet. I can basically get 1GB line speed when transferring files back and forth with 4 8TB Seagate hard drives in SHR-1. The NAS CPU was running at 50% during 1080p transcoding (with subtitles), when parity and update were done a bunch of packages were installed. this letter: 1. If you are using Plex

Pros
  • Affordability
Cons
  • Security
