You must have one of them!

StudBuddy is awesome! This makes finding studs very easy. It's very low tech but works great. There is no learning curve, just slowly move along the wall until you find the screw or nail that was used to hold the drywall in place. Note. I use this on a newly built house with 5/8" drywall and 1 5/8" drywall screws.

Pros
  • Elegant design
Cons
  • Empty

Paperclip for our Do It at Home Toolkit

I love that this little tool works so efficiently and is compact enough/no batteries needed to add it to our Quick Kit for small home projects ( hang a picture/mirror, tighten a screw, nail a skirting board, etc.). Because of the magnet, we tend to leave it on the hammer, which is what we use it with the most. I love this addition to the tools we use the most.

Pros
  • This is great
Cons
  • Almost everything is fine

Guessing About

This little thing is worth every penny you pay for it. So easy to use, just rub it on the wall like an AZ pattern and it will find your drywall screw or nail in the stud holding it to the wall. No more holes in your wall where you were trying to find a stud to hang a picture or put up a shelf. I've even used these battery powered spike finders that turn green when detected and this thing blows them out of the water. In my opinion, this is a must-have tool at an affordable price.

Pros
  • Absolute Legend
Cons
  • Nothing

Simple and works well but tends to slip out of my hands.

Simplicity and precision. I just run it along the wall, find some nails and line up the center line of the post. One star off for a non-ergonomic grip that tends to slip out of my hand. If you're curious about the magic inside, it has two 1/2" diameter and 3/8" high, 45mm apart and oriented in the same north/south direction. The actual active length is about 11cm. The two spikes at both ends are just a facade. You can have longer blocks with triple and quadruple magnets for even wider coverage.

Pros
  • Excellence in design
Cons
  • Weight

My brother was the first to think of it.

This thing has such a strong magnet I could practically throw it against a wall and expect it to stick to a counter (don't do that, you'll damage the walls!). It's strong enough not to worry about it breaking (again, until you drop it!), and since you're using it to find nails instead of wood, you can be sure you'll find the middle. Hairpin line so you don't have to make marks on both sides. I called my brother after he arrived and told him about it and he laughed and said his thorn seeker…

Pros
  • Great for a small house

  • Negative gift

This thing is shockingly amazing. I'm glad I finally got it

I've wanted to get one of these for years but have always used my electronic one. Finally, after a frustrating day when my email gave me an error telling me several locations for a hairpin, I've said enough! Not wanting to pay a small price for one of these magnetic viewfinders, I tried using a small strong magnet that I already had, but it's not the same. The stud partner did a great job helping me find some bolts in just a few minutes. Yes, it depends on whether the original drywall hanger…

Pros
  • Few competitors
Cons
  • Not the best

Sometimes the cheap option isn't the best option, but this time it is

I can't get over how annoying regular search engines are. Even if you buy one for $30 or $40, its accuracy is so low that unless you spend a hundred or so on one of those things, you're essentially playing. On the other hand you can get this switch just with two magnets and you move it along the wall until it's attached to something and that's where the pin is, obviously you want to move it up and down the wall to find other nails to find improvement. Your idea of where the counter is exactly…

Pros
  • Free for educational purposes
Cons
  • Unsafe

Spirit level required

I've always hated electronic spike finders. Maybe because I've always had cheap ones, but for home use, I could never justify spending over $20 on one. The batteries always run out (and I've never had 9V), it's hard to tell when it's reading the edge or middle of the rack, and you have to mark on the wall because you don't have 3 hands. all of this and I've used it a few times. That works great. I have a knockdown on my walls and can somehow "float" over it while still being able to tell when…
