Description of Thousand Oaks Optical Solar Filter Sheet: Perfect for Telescopes, Binoculars, and Cameras!

Silver-black polymer is the most common filtering material for observing sunspots and granulation, through telescopes and binoculars. Make a filter on your own for any telescope / binoculars / camera, and for a fraction of what factory made filters cost. The sun will appear in a natural orange color when viewed through your telescope using this filter. WARNING: ALWAYS MAKE SURE THE FILTER IS WELL ATTACHED TO THE TELESCOPE/BINOCULARS, USING STICKY TAPE, TO KEEP IT FROM FALLING WHILE OBSERVING.

I saw the sun and it opened my eyes!

I was pleasantly surprised. I used this film to build my own cardboard solar filter and it's amazing. Someone on Reddit posted a photo of the Sun taken with the H-Alpha telescope when it arrived, so I knew my expectations would not be met. But when I finally assembled my filter and put on the telescope, I was a little shocked. . . The sunspots were so bright and the sun's surface is clearly quite turbulent. I also like the coloring very much. I've seen photos taken with Baeder film (which…

Not what I ordered / But can be used.

I ordered this item because I thought the description and photos said it was black polymer plastic. What arrived was a sheet of Mylar foiled on one side, like those cheap paper glasses you can buy for $2. This is not what I ordered and if it weren't so close to the August 21st eclipse I would be sending it back! This material easily leaves fingerprints and scratches. I hope this works at least a little bit. Carefully! Edit: After some thought, I figured out the best way to use this film. Place…

Works almost as advertised

Works almost as advertised, great product! The filter feels very similar to very thin aluminum foil. You can cut and fold it to get any shape you want. I made a simple cover for my DSLR telephoto lens (image attached) and it works great. I took an old $1 folder I had years ago and cut a rectangle out of it. Then I fold it around the end of my telephoto lens and glue it where the folds meet. Then I had to cut the filter, wrap it around the edge of the folder's lid, and then tape it all over…

Works great on my 8 " telescope

After missing most of the 2017 eclipse despite living close to the path of totality, I decided to at least pursue my amateur hobby of astronomy to expand for observing behind the sun. I have an 8" reflecting telescope. I used poster board to create a holder to attach the end of the 9 1/4" telescope tube and attached this sheet to it with an additional poster and tape. While it sounds unconvincing and casual, it actually looks great .and is great for observing the sun.A word of caution - if you…

High-quality sun filter film!

A few months before the eclipse I bought a 10" x 10" sheet of this solar filter sheet. I've read dozens of ways to make my own filter caps for my digital camera, but I've settled on my own method. I have a box full of screw-on filters for different sizes of UV camera lenses. I simply picked a couple of filters with the cleanest glass and decided to put a solar sheet between the two filters. No cardboard, no tape, don't worry about destroying the solar film in the field. My wife has a nice craft

Full Set: Telescope Accessory

This is the real deal, Made in the USA. This material was more valuable than gold in the pre-GAE era and everyone wanted it. I tested it with various high brightness sources such as: They were able to see the structure of the LED crystal in great detail with a minimal amount of light. This filter medium is ideal for checking LED chip structures or as a low-intensity measurement for quality control. The UV laser does not pass nearly 100% through the filter. Just one or two random photons happen…
