Secure your gear with Thule 538XT 6-Feet One-Key System Cable Lock Review

Overall the locking system is fine and serves its purpose but a better locking system could be bought. The locking system comes with lousy instructions for installing a cable lock toggle switch. My first lock wouldn't lock at all and they sent me a replacement, but the new system cable lock doesn't work much better. I received my new Thule lock and assembled it with no problems. With the cable in the locked position, I was able to take it apart by unlocking it with little effort. I am a long time Thule customer and find this cable lock (538XT) to lack in quality and security, its sole purpose, especially at a premium price point. I returned mine in exchange for another one and gave Thule the benefit of the doubt hoping I could change my rating for the 5 star product I should have received for the price.

I have several other Thule products. XT CL Roof Racks, Bike Rear Seats, Snowboard Roof Racks and Pro XT Tow Bar Bike Racks. I really like that I can buy a set of locks and have one key for all these products. This castle is simply a disappointment. First, even in the closed position, you can insert the universal key and remove the latch. then I only used it 3 times and it broke. A small spring came loose somewhere in the lock and fell out, now I can't use it. Locking mechanism not working.

Is this a cheap lock? Yes. Is it a bit expensive? Yes. So why did I give four stars? Three reasons: 1) He does what he has to do. Locks like this are just a deterrent to keep opportunists from getting away with a bike rack while you're grabbing a bite to eat or going to the store. They are not designed to deter professional thieves with time and intent. 2) It fits the bike rack. Pretty clear. I liked the other Thule products I've bought so I bought two of these cables to take advantage of the One Key system. Upon receipt of the cable, it was found to have a serious design flaw that reduced safety. In the closed position, the lock cylinder can be easily pulled out with a standard assembly key to expose the interior and then unlocked with a screwdriver.
