Warning: Will not fit 5 gallon bottle

These stoppers do not fit my standard 5 gallon bottle at all. They are too thin/tapered and flexible to fit snugly and in fact they slide up until they are loose enough to be removed from the fingertip with light pressure. I had to use one of these so it was secured with lots of tape. The 2nd goes in the trash. I used a thick rubber stopper for my first batch and will do the same for the next batch. Far superior to this one.

Pros
  • Great price

  • Some cons

UPDATE: The problem with these bubblers was me, not the manufacturer. The corks CAN be reversed to fit my regular bottle (an empty 2 1/2 liter Everclear bottle). ho hmm Sometimes we just have to think outside the box. PREVIOUS POST: Disappointed as I thought these corks would fit regular glass bottles. They don't. It would be helpful for the seller to explicitly state to inexperienced winemakers on a tight budget that "this product is SPECIALLY SIZED FOR CHARCOAL BOTTLES ONLY AND WILL NOT BE…

Nothing out of the ordinary

Almost what you would expect. These plastic locks work great in standard sized bottles. You should really wedge them the first few times, but they should be tight to create an airtight seal (and this has been the case on all of the projects I've used them on). A few things to note: - My gateways look exactly like the picture, no red caps or other details. Putting them in a food grade disinfectant (like SanStar) will help reduce the number of bugs that want to swim around them and allow the…

Quality product but smells like they have been used before.

Goods received very quickly. When I opened the package I noticed a slight odor as if it had already been used. It smelled like fermented grape juice. I heated the instruments in water until I was sure all bacteria had been killed. It would be nice if they would include documentation regarding the preparation on this. In addition to receiving a used product; I love them for my intended use. I use them in half gallon fruit juice jugs and they fit perfectly. If you're wondering about size: Buy a…

Good price! Nice job and nice to look at! Note so they don't fall out

I bought them as spare gateways and spares. They work GREAT, but if you ferment too much they still pop out (like all other plugs - the fermentation gas pushes it out further). The wine will never get into the locks, so all you have to do is purify the water you pour into the lock itself. Not sure if any part of it can get dirty to be cleaned, the rubber stopper is the only part that can come into contact with wine, so just open the sluice, rinse the bottom and sterilize the stopper the normal…
