I had an old fashioned oil filter tool but when the filter is stuck it just won't budge. Second, the position of the filters is so narrow that you have to disassemble all sorts of things to get at them. This tool is so resourceful. Adjust the ratchet in the direction you want to rotate and move. If the filter clip was set to the opposite position, just keep turning, the cams will eventually turn the clip over and you're done! thickness is actually a bad thing! You need a wrench that is slim and flat to fit anywhere. Unfortunately, this tool has teeth that stick out like crazy when grabbing smaller filters. This didn't work for me because the oil filter on my engine has a very thin gap. between filter and pan, so this tool didn't even fit properly. I had to use another AutoZone Simar tool, which had an increasingly thin profile as it captured the filter.

It took me a second to figure out how to tighten the handles but once figured that out it took 30 seconds to remove the oil filter using the previous 3 different types of tools I previously bought had failed.
