Type of review

I can report that on a 2014 Dell 8700 XPS desktop, this case does not have the semaphore timeout issue that some external cases/authors have. This does not guarantee that you will not experience this on your PC. This is a conflict between the SATA to USB bridge controller in the case and your SATA/USB controller on your PC motherboard. Usually the only way to fix this problem is to replace the motherboard or the case. Because replacing the entire PC is cheaper and easier than just the…

Works best in HDD enclosures

This 5.25 inch drive enclosure design is nothing new. I have an old IDE/ATA FireWire case made by ByTecc a few years ago with the exact same design, just silver. It's a new design, painted black, and an obviously modified controller (in this case, a SATA -> USB 3.0 bridge). I chose it for my LG Electronics 14x. Software Free SATA Blu-ray Internal Rewriter, Black (WH14NS40) knowing I'll be limited to x6 Blu-ray speeds until I get a new computer with USB 3.0. This has been found with Mac OS…

Beautiful little case

I bought this unit for $20 to put in a slim SATA BD optical drive and I am very happy with it. The physical body is carefully machined aluminum with no machining marks. Anodized in matte black with a small subtle Vantec logo on the top. It appears to be fingerprint resistant, which is a plus for a portable case. The drive fits perfectly and the front panel tolerances are less than a millimeter. The kit includes four small rubber feet that fit nicely on the bottom. My drive performance was also…

Just add acetone for a clean, sleek design

Absolutely love the 12.7mm version. The main body is black polished anodized aluminum and the judicious use of acetone cleanly and completely removes both the label from the underside and the graphics from the top of the body. The main body is a shapeless rectangular prism made of brushed black aluminium. The slim drive is attached to the removable tray with four screws, and the tray is attached to the chassis with two screws. My only gripe (don't take the star off) is the tiny plastic tab that

A few words about the blue power LEDs.

I use it to host an internal DVD drive for my Apple Mac Mini with no drivers. I appreciate the USB3 speed and the quiet, fanless operation. What I really like is the blue LED display. It lights up when the device is switched on and flashes when data is being transferred. That's not the best part - it turns off when I put the car to sleep. For Mac or Linux operating systems, disconnecting the USB device will back up the computer. For example, if you hibernate the machine while the disk enclosure

I had trouble with that, however.

I bought a 12.7mm drive case, so my review is dedicated to this one. The first one I received I followed the instructions in the email. After everything was assembled, the instructions said to use both cables if you are not sure if your computer's USB port can only power the device from the main cable. what I did. The device will then continue to connect and disconnect repeatedly. I then unplugged the device and waited for my computer to catch up as it seemed to connect/disconnect very quickly…

Nearly perfect except for fit and finish

I was about to squeeze the FireWire 800 / 400 / USB-2 enclosure when I spotted this one. I knew I would be sacrificing speed now because my 3 year old Apple MacBook Pro only has USB-2. The reason I wanted USB 3 is because even Apple seems to be phasing out the FireWire port, as evidenced by the new MacBook Pro lineup with Retina display. (At least the 13-inch model I was eyeing.) So I actually made my mind up about future compatibility/speed, and I'm glad I did. I installed an LG WH14NS40…

Looks very good. in Hard Drive Cases

Designed to store optical discs longer than usual. I haven't seen this length in a long time. When I put it on my Asus external drive, it got comically huge. Otherwise it looks very nice, smooth on all sides, no sharp edges, don't know why one side is rounded, except to make sure you line up the drawers correctly. if it is not already assembled. These parts are near-lethal: heavy, sharp, and ready for a finger guillotine if you're not extra careful. While there is only one "right" way to…
