The adapter works, but the included power adapter was DOA.

Got the adapter and used it on a 2.5" drive - no problem, high throughput etc. Went to a 3.5" drive and found that the included power adapter was dead. Using a voltmeter, I made sure the adapter wasn't working. I used a different adapter I had with the same voltage, amperage and cable polarity as specified - the drive worked fine. So - good rating for the power supply, but that's where the power supply DOA arrived. 1 * rating.

Pros
  • practical stuff
Cons
  • I really have no complaints about it, everything is fine

Works great, easy setup

I gave my old USB 2.0 hard drive adapter to a good friend who needed it. I've had it for many years and it's always worked great. So I searched for an updated product that would suit my needs. I found a Vantec SATA/IDE TO USB 3.0 adapter (CB-ISA225-U3) and got it here through Revain. It arrived as expected and I've already put it to work. First let me tell you what's in the box. That wasn't clear to me at all on the product page. First, it's the USB adapter itself and a short SATA cable, about…

Works as expected but no SMART support

This is basically as expected: a pair of cables to connect a PATA or SATA hard drive via USB3. I bought it specifically for the PATA USB3 capability as better SATA adapters/enclosures are commonly used for this purpose and most PATA solutions are USB2 which is a bottleneck even for older PATA drives. It's not as elegant as an enclosure, but this kit at least allows me to roughly double the maximum serial throughput of PATA drives compared to USB2 (I got 70MB/s on the pair I tested, which is…

Beware of Computer Accessories and Peripherals

I had an old hard drive with a lot of old photos that I wanted to transfer to my new computer. I connected it to check and everything worked fine. I figured I'd come back later that evening and reschedule. Connected a second time and got a message that the drive is unreadable and needs to be formatted. Everything on this drive completely ruined. Totally useless

Don't buy if your drive's IDE connector is near the power connector

The design of the IDE connector is prominent, making it impossible to connect power and the IDE connector at the same time. It should work on other IDE drives as long as they have wider connector spacing (as long as your jumpers are between the IDE connector and the power supply you should be fine). Unfortunately, neither of my two old IDEs recognized it. Laptop hard drives, even if set to master. It works with SATA drives, but that's not what I bought it for.

It seemed good, but then everything went wrong

Setup was easy. It seemed to be exactly what I wanted. Worked once. I followed the instructions and the computer recognized the drive immediately. I started setting up the disk and everything was going fine until the error came up. I closed everything and restarted, but this time it didn't recognize the drive. Now the drive is completely dead. I thought maybe I just had a bad ride, so I grabbed another one and tried again. Up like the first. I tried transferring some data to it and it started…

Very versatile!: Computer accessories and peripherals

I have this kit with some 2.5"/3.5" IDE drives and a 2.5" SATA drive connected to Linux Mint 19.1 and it worked Great! The accompanying booklet is very well designed and illustrated. What they say about no drivers needed is spot on. You simply connect your drive according to the diagrams in the brochure and you're good to go. Since the various drives I used had many different operating systems, I had to process them with gparted before they were mounted. So if you are recovering data from a…

Fast data transfer when it works!

I currently have a similar product from another manufacturer that I have been using for about five years with no problems. The only reason I bought this is because I've been transferring terabytes of data from potentially failing drives lately. If you know your hard drive is fine, there are no bad sectors on it, and you just need to transfer data from one drive to another, this adapter will work just fine. However, consider buying a different adapter if you have a failed drive that you want to…

READ this LEGAL review CAREFULLY as it will save you from trouble. I'll start by saying I'm not a regular user of Joe Blow's computer. I'm a full-time sysadmin and also run an IT sales and repair shop in town. This IDE/SATA to USB 3.0 adapter is a poor quality product. This junk has by no means passed the quality control standards known to the civilized world. I bought it to recover some valuable data from some old IDE backup drives. Plugged it into a working spare laptop first and the system…

  • Quick Guide

I have used this to read data from at least five (5) legacy IDE drives and one (1) SATA drive. This worked for all but one - a 1998 4.3GB 34300 WD Caviar HD - I've tried jumpers in all sorts of settings - no dice. I connected it to an old computer with IDE cables and it turned out that the drive was not working. A few tips: (1) As with other IDE drives, some of them should be configured as slaves, not masters. I found this out by finding documentation on the Vantec website stating that the…
