Like a sheath for sharp blades. Unfortunately, they don't cut paper, plastic, or yarn very well. And yes, I used them on yarn first to give them the best chance of serving the purpose they were bought for.

We were not impressed with this product. It takes too much effort to cut a piece of yarn, they are not very sharp. I have another of the same type that comes in a set of crochet hooks that work great from the first cut. It lasts 3 to 5 segments. Eventually I started folding the yarn and tugging a little and it works a little better but I didn't expect to have to do this because I don't have to do it with my other yarns.

All four scissors in this batch are very sharp and cut yarn and thread with ease (so far we've tried them on mercerized cotton, worsted acrylic yarn, etc. cotton thread) . I was concerned by some negative reviews that the blades were dull, but they aren't. Plus, they fit my left-handed man just as well as my right-handed man. I highly recommend them!
