RS485 Issues - Barebones Desktops

Although several other USB<->RS485 adapters work with the same computer and devices, I have not been able to get the Waveshare adapter to work with any RS485 device. RS232 worked as expected.

This is a beast out of the box. But Hardy and I have been using it to isolate raspberry pi from high voltage regulators for the past 3 months with no problems. i buy more

RS485 problems

+15kV error IEC16000-4-2 ESD test

I bought this specifically to monitor the UART output of my DUT during the ESD test. It worked mostly (there were a few USB failures but could be unplugged/replugged to fix the problem) up to 15kV. I did a 15kV test and started getting garbage from the Waveshare terminal. My DUT's UART output still works with another UART receiver. Cycling the current did not fix this problem (at 15kV at lower voltages I've seen trips recovering after cycling the current). The description says "lightning…

This inexpensive device uses a real FTDI chip and I had no problems using it on my computer. I opened the box and found that the board is well positioned, with plenty of clearance between the USB side and the RS-485 side, so isolation shouldn't be an issue. Both the RS-485 and RS-232 ports have multiple surge suppressors and the TTL port can be switched between 5V and 3.3V, so the device needs to be reliable and versatile.
