Great Value for my opinion

Very well made. Worth the money. LV and LN have every reason to be concerned. As far as this China factory goes, they turn out product that's every bit as good. I bought a low angle block from LV when they first came out and paid about 90 dollars for that too. The Wood River is just as well made. If you need new planes and actually use them, take a serious look at the WoodCraft V3 line, if they follow LVs pricing strategy they'll ratchet up the prices about 10% a year until somebody else comes…

Pros
  • easy to adjust heavy duty a very fine tool
Cons
  • The blade is not very sharp out of the box, which can be frustrating for people looking for a tool that's ready to use right away

First miss for woodriver

I was so impressed with woodrivers #4 & #5 planes that I decided to buy the low angle and standard angle block plane set. I don't see them advertised on ebay anymore so I'm writing my review here. First the good. Both block planes are typical of woodriver. They are machined well. The bottoms are flat. The blades are flat. They are easy to adjust and they look great. Now for the bad. The knuckle cap on both of them locks into place in the rearward position. So you put it on. Pull it back toward…

Pros
  • Hand Planes & Accessories
Cons
  • The adjustable mouth feature may be difficult to use effectively without prior experience

solid tool on my review.

It needs some work out of the box. I used a file to ease the edges and throat. It took about 45 minutes to hone the back and bevel to a mirror polish.

Pros
  • Hand Tools
Cons
  • The plane may be prone to clogging with wood shavings and debris

Twisted iron good for me

It was well greased and snug in its cheap cardboard box. The fit and finish looked great out of the box but, the iron was badly twisted and it took 3 hours and 5 beers to flatten the back on a dmt course stone.I will update when I get it a sharp user.

Pros
  • Great tool , well made and very nice to use
Cons
  • The locking mechanism can be difficult to adjust, making it hard to achieve precise cuts

An all around nice block plane

Definitely a nice plane right out of the box. Looks fantastic. The sole was pretty much flat, only needed a tiny bit of work. The ONLY reason I'm not giving a full 5 stars has to do with the adjustable mouth. For some reason, it's lost adjustment a few times, causing the mouth to close against the blade during use. Otherwise, a nice little block plane overall.

Pros
  • Nice thin shavings after honing the blade. Really like the cam clamping action to lock the blade depth.
Cons
  • The blade needs frequent sharpening, which can be time-consuming and frustrating for some users

At best, an expensive middle of the road block plane

I've been a woodworker for going on five decades (not counting my teen or earlier years of messing in my dad's shop). I served a four year carpenter apprenticeship, and for the past couple of decades have been an advanced furniture builder. I am also an unrepentent tool collector and will one day find myself living in a van down by the river. With all my tools (saws, planes, chisels and HUNDREDS of plumb bobs), why would I purchase this Woodriver block plane? First it was on sale. Second…

Pros
  • Based On A Classic Design
Cons
  • The plane may not work well on certain types of wood or with certain techniques

Very good buy and good performer

I got this on sale at woodcraft (sorry ebay) and compared to the alternates it is a real bargain. It is great for cleaning up end grain, small tear outs and edges. The one I got was true and ready to go out of the box. All I had o do was wipe the protective gunk off the cap and iron. The cap iron is released by pulling up on the knuckle, a nice touch. I did a little cleanup on Lyptus, hard maple and teak end grain. It worked OK out of the box and better after sharpening.Compared to the LV and…

4 stars value for money, 5 for everything else

This is a serious tool with weight to it and very easy to use and adjust. Once adjusted everything stays in place. I watched many reviews and it paid off as I was up and running in less than an hour of adjustments relating to my immediate need of cleaning / planing the top of my workbench. Been a breeze to use since that project and now use for a variety of purposes including removing dried glue (not recommended), beveling corners and edges, removing splintered edges from plywood after making…

Pros
  • The plane worked very well. Better than many other planes I have purchased.
Cons
  • The cuts produced by the plane may not be as smooth as some users would like

Nice block plane when on sale.

My $99.99 WR low angle block plane performed good on oak after sharpening the blade almost razor sharp. This style lever cap works when the slotted lever cap screw height is properly adjusted. The slotted lever cap screw positioned in the narrow area of the "skeleton key hole" when the cap is closed seems to work. The plane body sides are square to the sole. After a tiny "paper cut" on my index fingerI used a diamond file on the sharp machined edges of the sole.My block plane sole is already flat…

Pros
  • Block Planes
Cons
  • The blade may be prone to chipping or breaking if mishandled
