Good things in stick electrodes

Always like a Hobart stick. Plastic cases stay dry for a long time without heating. For beginners with low amperage AC welders, Hobart makes a 7018AC version of this rod that runs smoother for smaller machines.

Pros
  • Perfect for outdoor activities
Cons
  • No automatic

Doesn't work well with my Lincoln Radio

I've been welding for 17 years just to give you some info. I have used Lincoln AC rods for years and they have performed well. These rods are very difficult to start and don't burn well until you've burned a quarter of the rod. They are not packaged well and may have gotten wet at some point.

Pros
  • Absolutely amazing!
Cons
  • Expensive

The best welding rods make you a better welder

I'm by no means a professional welder, I only practice at night for about a week with no experience. The weld at the top is a high frequency stick, which I think is sturdier, easier to ignite, and produces a lot less smoke. I use a cheap welder to learn, but based on my brief experience, the pole is important. Listen to the guys who know what they are doing there are better rods out there.

Broken Flux Tips

I like Lincoln Excalibur or esab 7018 but in short I settled on a few. They worked fine but I didn't like how the slag separated. They didn't hit very well either, but I think that's because half of them had flux chipped around the tips. I don't know if it came from the manufacturer or the carrier, but either way it was pretty annoying. I had to cut off the ends of many of them. I've used them for work that wasn't super critical or reviewable, so they worked for me, but I wouldn't recommend…

Pros
  • Welding and Soldering

Very hard to hit, sticky and very frustrating.

I have never seen new rods work so poorly. It's almost impossible to launch them terribly without a hard punch or pick and stick. This is a very disappointing rod choice. I usually use 6011 and 6013 but wanted to try them and now I will go back or find a better 7018. The rods look good out of the pack but with Lincoln 225 on a clean flat shaft the rod will burn about 1/8" in flux and make it impossible to re-start without hitting the tip or causing it to roughly hit the line Knocking the rod…

Pros
  • Welder
Cons
  • Damaged
