It's nice to have sharp knives again

It's nice to have sharp knives again! A sharpening rod alone should keep a good knife sharp for many years. Unfortunately, one day they will eventually get to the point where they need to be sharpened. I've been buying and using this or that "handy" sharpener for my knives for a number of years, but they just don't work as well as they do. No way. That reversible stone, a dash of whetstone oil (or mineral or olive oil), and some elbow grease puts these knives back in the game. What a joy to…

Finishing - sharpening stones

The product is delivered in a box. It is not broken or torn out of the packaging. No chips, all corners are solid, sharp edges. When using it for the first time, there is a very small spot of dirt on the list. This means it doesn't have the same consistency as the rest of the stone. This is a small part of something that interferes with knife sharpening. Perhaps even the appearance of chips on the edge of the blade. I took a photo to show this piece mixed with stone. I would not recommend this…

The "raised " edges problem is NOT a real problem.

So many reviews from people who are clearly more experienced at complaining until 'someone fixes it for them' than trying to fix problems. Any sharpening stone requires maintenance to keep it sharp, as sharpening the blade wears the stone unevenly. This is achieved with a "smoothing stone" that can be used to remove rough edges left over from the shaping process. They only cost a few dollars. It's a cheap stone. It is used for practicing and maintaining tools in workshops (chisels, etc.). If…

I was impressed. What a beautiful stone!

I recently got a job at a state park. One of the first things they asked me to do was chop down some vines. I was shocked when I went to the tool shed and saw how blunt all the tools were. A worker is only as good as his (or her) tools. I asked how I could sharpen them and was directed to the grinder. For secateurs? Since I don't want to give my money to the government but want sharp tools, I was looking for an inexpensive sharpener. This stone is great. Whenever I have a bit of free time when…

  • Questionable Purchase for the Elderly

I've had this stone for a long time, here it is. Firstly, it's made of stone, so chips and dents are quite normal. If you want the perfect stone you will spend a lot more. Second, I don't use oil, I soak it in a glass of water for a minute or two. Put it on some towels and start practicing. I use edge tracking, which means I guide with the cutting edge, not a rod or blunt end. Ten or twelve passes at a fairly sharp angle on the rough side and then the same amount on the thin side. Don't start…
