Review on Dell P2715Q 27-Inch LED Lit 4K Monitor: Immerse Yourself with Crystal Clear Picture Quality by Mario Badoni

Revainrating 3 out of 5

In my opinion now the best

So this is the first 4k monitor I'm buying. Now we can say that there is no 4k yet and it is imperceptible and what is wrong, but to each his own. I have a stunning quality 65-inch 4K Samsung TV calibrated for amazing color accuracy. I've just finished building a monstrous PC and needed a monitor that would stand up to all odds, so I started searching and stumbled upon this monitor. My computer specs that matter are: CPU: I7 4930kGPU: AMD XFX R9-295xMEM: 16GB Corsair Platinum With those specs, I could have plugged this monitor in and run 4k, ok? The cable just didn't work with my machine / At first I thought the monitor was defective as I couldn't get the PC settings to the full recommended resolution. It stayed at 1440P working through the settings to the point where the monitor stayed in deep sleep and had to unplug the power cord to get out (more on that later). I finally got it to 4k via a mini-DP-DP cable, by changing the MST settings to secondary. The problem was that it only ran at 30 Hz and that crap was just unbearable for me. Everything seemed slow and I didn't spend anywhere near $500 for this kind of quality. I was going to contact Dell and Revain for a refund until I decided to read other reviews and monitor issues. I ended up buying mini DP to DP cables from Amazon and Low and lo and behold I can upgrade to 4k @ 60Hz on my PC with no issues. The cables that came with it were just ass and not DP 1.2 which is really crazy considering this is a premium 4k monitor (WTF DELL). Which brings me to a problem I had when messing around with the settings earlier, the nightmare problem. Sometimes when my computer goes into sleep mode and the monitor turns off, it doesn't wake up 100%. Sometimes I have to pull the cord to wake up, sometimes I have to press a few menu buttons. Sometimes I need to change the input multiple times. It's a hassle, but I can handle it. Coming from a 3 year old Acer monitor that plugs into an Xbox and a PC and is smart enough to switch to the next input when the other one shuts down, this is annoying. The Dell monitor does not switch inputs automatically. For example, if my Xbox One is in HDMI mode and I turned it off, I have to manually switch to DP to get the picture from my PC. (Basic functionality is present in all monitors now and today). BTW, HDMI only supports 4k at 30Hz and no console supports 4k for those who wanted that for console gaming. Also a quick cheat, port placement sucks. They're on the back, facing down, covered by a removable bezel (which I'll just leave out) including the audio jack and USB hub ports (WTF DELL again). They cannot be reached without rotating the monitor in portrait mode or in a circle. Enough of the bad, now for the good. I love this monitor, the different angles I can move the screen to, how I can raise the monitor to any height I want and it stays there is amazing. How can I rotate it to portrait mode or how can I access the ports on the back just by rotating it, that's great. (Compensates for poor port placement) These guys also have Grade A color. I'm no color lover or photographer, but Dell calibrates all of these monitors before they ship, and it shows when you leave the box. It looked good enough that I didn't need to adjust anything, and my photography friend loves it for its work. 4k resolution games are taxed but my install destroys them. I can play Mortal Kombat X in 4k at 60hz at a steady 60fps and this monitor shines. The level of detail I see beforehand is insane. Partly because I now wear glasses between my previous monitor and this one, and partly because this monitor kicks ass. I love this monitor so much that I plan to buy a second and possibly a third in the future for a great setup. Summary Pros: Color accuracy Resolution (MOAR PIXELS) Multiple inputs Fully customizable Cons: OEM DP cables are not 1.2 (does not support 4k@60Hz) right out of the box. Nightmare sleep problem (see above) Bad port layout Price (due to bugs the price should be about $50-$100 lower) If and when the price of this drops (I bought it for $460) I will at least , Buy 1 more for my desktop set up. I really like this monitor and the cons aren't as bad as I made them out to be. I use my own high quality DP 1.2 cables and no longer have access to most ports, but this may be an issue for some. I would recommend this to anyone looking for an affordable 4k monitor for non-FPS games and photo editors. Also a great monitor for multimedia.
