Review on Dell S2340M - 23 Inch LED Lit Monitor with 1920X1080 Resolution, 60Hz Refresh Rate, and High Definition - ‎293M3 Model by Ryan Powell

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Incredibly light and compact.

I bought the S2240M as a secondary display for my 2011 21.5" iMac. A glossy 21.5" IPS panel with excellent reviews for $140 seemed too good to be true. My plan was, connecting it to my iMac using an HDMI->DVI cable with a Displayport->HDMI adapter. When I received the monitor I was shocked at how small the box was.My most recent monitor purchase was a 24" Dell LCD about 4 years ago, and let me tell you it was a huge box, I pulled it all out and again was amazed at the compactness and lightness of the monitor, separate from the monitor, which saves size and space, but adds one more thing , which may need to be replaced if something goes wrong. Impressions of this situation). This monitor's screen does not align vertically on a 21.5" iMac (I have a 2011 model). The S2240M is only 4". from table to screen (actual pixels, not the case). My iMac is about 6 1/4 inches from table to screen. So if you want the screens to be side by side you need to place them on something (2 1/4 inches) to keep them aligned. high. I installed the monitor with no problems and then tried to connect my video cable. Houston, we have a problem. My video cable (HDMI->DVI) turned out to be a heavy wall (ie very thick wire) wall mount cable with a slight bend at the ends. The area where the cables connect doesn't have much vertical clearance. Instead of a shelf shape where the cables enter from below, I would call a scoop shape where the cables enter at an angle and then rotate vertically to secure the connection. The thick cable didn't fit properly and wouldn't allow a connection. Back at Amazon, I opted for a new, thinner cable. However, I had a standard DVI cable and connected an old Mac Mini that was gathering dust. The standard DVI cable connected well, but was still tight. If a Dell engineer is reading this, look for the best way to shape the connector. The image looked very good over a wide viewing area, there were no dead pixels. I know the arguments against glossy displays and reflections, but they just seem better to me than matte displays. I wouldn't compare the quality to the iMac's IPS display, but I'll wait until I tinker with the settings and add my final opinion to this review later. A fun coincidence is that the Mac Mini I used for testing turned out to be a near-perfect shelf for this monitor to stand and align with my iMac. This is an older (2006) Mac Mini, larger than newer models.
