💽 Sonnet Technologies Tempo 6Gbps SATA PCIe 2.0 Drive Card for SSDs (TSATA6-SSD-E2) Review

Just received this item. Sonnet has a newer version that supports two drives and may be faster but is much more expensive which is why I chose this product. There is an expansion panel that allows you to install two SSDs. Tomorrow I will add another SSD. After turning on my Mac Pro (early 2009), the SSD popped up immediately. I plan to put the system on one SSD and the applications/users on another. I use a NAS for my data. Very happy with this decision.

I'm leaving a review because I saw at least one person had problems with it. It booted with my Mac Pro 3.1 out of the box. My serial number starts with a "B" so no firmware update is required. Performance is what I would expect from my old SATA 6 SSD (150MB/s write, 550MB/s read). I bet it could almost match my m.2 drive (on a PCIe x4 card) with a better drive. I'm very excited to free up these 3.5" bays for a RAID10 hard drive array in this old workhorse.

I have a Mac Pro 3.1 from early 2008. I installed a Sonnet Temp card with a new 1TB Samsung SSD and the boot drive with Carbon Copy Cloner on copied the new SSD. I then changed the boot drive in the system startup settings to a freshly installed SSD. The operating system boots to the new SSD drive and everything works great. I'm editing this a year later. And the cost is down 50% and the device is still holding its weight. I still get pretty good SATA 3 speeds for my SSDs. This card allows your OSX operating system to boot from a PCIe slot, but it is only recognized as an external drive, not an internal one Journey. Only SATA ports are recognized as internal. This 500GB SSD card has been added to an HP desktop computer for additional internal storage. HP, like many factory computers, is small and cramped inside. This card only requires an unused PCIe slot with eight or more lanes. There is no need to disassemble the computer to access the drive bay (if available) for your drive, and no wired connection to the motherboard and power supply is required. For me it was worth saving the usual installation of additional internal memory.
