Does not act as a loading hub until it detects an operating system.

Even when plugged into an external power supply, the hub won't charge anything unless it's also plugged into a booted computer. This means it's useless for charging if it's on, if the power light is on, but your laptop is in sleep mode or the lid is closed. You can't fool it by plugging the host connection into another powered USB port; it is only charged when it detects a running operating system on the host port. There is no reference to this seemingly obvious lack of functionality in the…

Solid, reliable, functional: worth the extra cost

I've been trying for a long time to find a decent, reliable USB hub. It doesn't seem like it should be that hard, but apparently it is. I've looked through a few that I've returned, either because they somehow failed or because of problematic features like switches that needed to be manually reset after a power outage. This one is expensive, but so far so good. The Congress with mounting plate and rubber grip is not a critical feature, but a thoughtful improvement. If you need a hub that works…

Excellent work! fits USB hubs

Buyers must exercise caution when ordering electronics and computer accessories these days. Well, not with StarTech. These guys make the things they advertise to specification. I recently purchased half a dozen items from them for a large project and they all worked to spec. And in 2020, when something is made to order, it makes you want to have a pizza party. What I did when the project was finished. In any case, thanks to StarTech for making quality products so I didn't have to stop halfway…

Well-built computer and accessory kit

Star Tech has long had a reputation for quality and reliability, and this desktop USB hub is built like a tank. Although the device is quite compact, each of the seven USB ports has a status light that shows the connection. There is an additional indicator of the status of the connection to the computer. The body is all metal. USB connectors have blue tabs on the inside to indicate they're USB 3.0 compatible (although like all USB 3.0 hubs, they're backwards compatible with 2.0 and 1.1 cables…

  • Easy to use

Just over half work

Of the 7 ports available, 4 and 5 don't work. Which I only discovered a few weeks after receiving, as I initially only connected 3 devices. The three devices I had connected to it were 2 external hard drives (one self-powered and the other via a hub) and a keyboard. They work fine, and plugging in a USB drive to transfer files also works (if I avoid dead ports). The main problem is that I also have an external Blu-ray player that I only use occasionally. Connecting to a hub while other devices…

Cons
  • Expensive

The only issue I had was the USB-3 (A/B) data cable that came with it. It was broken and showing USB 2.0 speed. Given the seemingly high quality of the hub itself, I'm not deducting a point for that. Over the years I've found that high-end devices often come with questionable quality data cables. I swapped it and everything is fine. I read many reviews and had a few comments: 1) USB-3 cables are usually shorter. Potentially high data rates can be a problem when using longer standard quality…
