Review on Swagtron Pro T1 Hoverboard - The Ultimate Self-Balancing Electric Scooter! by Daniel Espinoza

Won't calibrate on my review.

I bought this to replace my old "no name" hoverboard, which works fine but isn't UL certified so I worry about it catching fire. I really wanted to give the Swagtron T1 5 stars. It is fully UL certified for the board, electronics, battery, and charger. It looks good, seems to be well constructed and feels solid, and the price is reasonable. But my T1 won't operate correctly. When I first tried it, even though I'm an experienced rider, the red light came on indicating it couldn't get into self balancing mode. So I followed the manual's instructions about how to calibrate it (putting it level on the floor, lining up the foot paddles using a level, holding in the power button for 3 seconds until it beeps, letting go and then power off when the LEDs blink). I've tried that over and over, and it won't calibrate. It will show green for self balancing when I step on it, but starts going backwards or turning before I even get the second foot on. I finally was able to stand on it with both feet, but found I literally have to lean forward on both pedals to stay stationary. So it won't calibrate correctly. Either sensors inside are misaligned or some software bug isn't setting the calibration. Plus I'd say compared to my old one, it feels a little more twitchy in the control response and the stepping pulses of the motor wheels are more noticeable. So I'm going to have to return mine. I wouldn't even give it 2 stars, except for that it does seem well made and I trust the UL certification. I'm hoping it's just a software bug or alignment thing they'll work out as production progresses.Another comment- I think there is an error in the manual about how to toggle in and out of learner mode. The manual says press and hold the power button for 3 seconds until it beeps. That is the same instruction for triggering the calibration! If you own this and try to toggle learning mode using those instructions, you are likely screwing up the calibration. I surfed the Swagtron website and I found a FAQ about how to toggle learning mode if the hoverboard seems to operate slowly. There it says with the power off, press the power button once to turn it on, then again 1 second later to switch modes (a longer beep confirms it). I emailed their customer service to confirm the error in the manual, but got no reply.

Pros
  • Scooters
Cons
  • The Swagtron Pro T1 Hoverboard is bulky and takes up a lot of space in storage
