Road test with African parts

I live in Zambia, Africa. The shocks I bought were for a late 90's Toyota 4Runner. I often drive on very bad gravel roads and occasionally long stretches on asphalt. Driving on tarmac involves turning to overshoot and sometimes hitting large potholes. The shock absorbers I replaced were original and the car has clocked almost 100,000 miles. I am traveling with an empty or loaded car with up to 10 people. My use of these shocks far surpasses anything people in the States can experience and I needed the best I could get. After looking at Bilstein, Rancho and a few shocks from American brands, I settled on KYB. I was initially drawn to the Heavy Duty designation and was won over by previous experiences with the brand combined with the reviews I read online. The ride is firm and not unlike what you might expect from a sports car. If you're a football mom or someone with overly skinny buttocks, this may not be for you. On the other hand, I just drove 500 miles from Mansa to Lusaka and paid for the journey to be very convenient. Handling has improved significantly, and the truck's behavior on rough pavement and dirt roads is much better than before. There's probably no such thing as a perfect shock for what I do, but if there was/is one, it would be very similar to these KYBs.

Pros
  • Monotube truck design outperforms all other standard shock absorbers
Cons
  • Big and bulky
