Review on 💪 Efficiently Remove Studs with Shop Iron 16023 3/8" Drive Stud Extractor by Wayne Seba

My new best friend! - Wrench

Great tool, if you don't have this tool when replacing Ford 4.6/5.4 exhaust manifolds you may regret it. After last time I did this project using extractors, weld nuts, heat, penetrants and every other tool I could find in my shop. I bought one of these to use on an Expedition exhaust manifold. There's not much you can do to cut off rusted nuts, but once you've got them and the distributor off, this tool makes everything else easy. Instead of trying the bare top of the studs before removing the manifold, I placed the tool on the stud and tightened it closer to the cylinder head. After 20 minutes I unscrewed all 8 studs, even two over the manifold flange were completely rusted. Only used a regular 3/8" ratchet, no extra force needed or broken rod, although some of them were quite tight. For best performance, lubricate the collet nut threads on the tool before using and I cleaned the jaws after removing each bolt to ensure they were clean for the next bolt. Once the puller starts to grab the bolt you don't have to hold the silver cone, it stays in place and you just keep turning the black nut until the bolt loosens and the whole thing is pulled out of your hand. You'll have to hold the silver nut when loosening the bolt, but that's easy. Pick one up, put it in your tool box, it's worth its weight in gold.

Pros
  • Decent performance
Cons
  • Could have chosen a newer model
