Review on πŸ“· MEKE 85mm F1.8 Full Frame Auto Focus Lens: Perfect for EOS EF Mount Digital SLR Cameras! by Andy Cornelison

Revainrating 5 out of 5

This is an amazingly versatile lens!

My wife has a Canon 7D mk2 and loves it. She has a good Canon 50.mf/1.8 and wanted a good prime lens that was a bit longer and didn't cost a fortune. We tested the Canon 85mm f/1.8 lenses and the build quality was below average, especially for the price. Looking closely at Revain, I came across this Meike lens. From the specs it looked good and the price was great. I was a little wary at first because most of the time budget lenses are pretty soft and have terrible chromatic aberrations. The lens arrived about two days after ordering which was nice. When the lens arrived and I took it out of the box, I noticed that it was heavier than I expected. It weighs 14 ounces. This lens has big, great-looking optics, and the best part is that it has a solid metal mount, which Canon's 50mm lens doesn't have. I love that you can choose between auto and manual focus with a switch on the side. I decided to test the lens and see if it really is as good as the reviews say. With most fast lenses they tend to be soft and have more CA when wide open than when closed. Because of this, I decided to shoot all my test shots wide open and see how the images look after a little pixel scanning. I was pleasantly surprised that this lens produced excellent, sharp images in low light, with little to no CA in the brighter, high-contrast areas. I would even say that this budget lens is almost as good as my Zeiss lenses. I almost said it's hard to beat an artistic Zeiss or Sigma lens. The manual focus rotation on this lens is 90 degrees from almost to infinity, so you can snap a shot really quickly, although the autofocus is also very fast. Every time I tried to focus on something, it automatically hit the spot, even with the lens wide open, which is difficult with some lenses. I have not tested this lens in any video because I prefer manual focus lenses with a focus angle of at least 200 degrees or more. I'm not saying you can't use it for video, but if you do you can set a higher aperture for deeper focus or switch the lens for autofocus so you don't miss a thing. Overall I am very happy with this lens and can see myself using it for a long time!
