Review on πŸ’‘ FLIR VP50-2 Non-Contact Voltage Detector with Light, Vibration, Beeper Alarms, and LED Flashlight by Darren Anderson

Great addition to my husband's tool box!

To be honest I wasn't sure what it was when I saw it (of course I've been on foot since) so I asked my husband. He was immediately hooked and told me that this was one of the things he had wanted for a long time but couldn't justify buying because he had a professional multimeter. Given his excitement, I had to give it to him. In hindsight he should have bought it a year ago because it saves a lot of time and frankly it's safer than opening a potentially active terminal or contact just to see if it's powered on. Unlike an ammeter, this instrument measures the alternating electric field, meaning it will work on any live wire or terminal, whether a load is connected or not. The VP40 model has a normal sensitivity of 901 kV AC and a high sensitivity of 241 kV AC. In normal mode he could see 24VAC on the HVAC thermostat wire when he pressed the tip against the wire. The High Sensitivity mode is extremely sensitive and picks up 120 VAC fields from several meters away. The touch tip is selective enough to distinguish between a line slit and a neutral slit (see video). The handpiece is illuminated and lights up automatically when switched on. There is a flashlight on the other end, but it cannot double as a voltage tester. Every aspect of use was intuitive, with the exception of the flashlight, and my husband had to specifically look up the manual to figure out how to turn it on, as it requires holding down the power button for about two seconds to turn it on. out. This is very useful and works well. Highly recommended!
