I'm not an expert, I just read the reviews and watched tutorial videos before signing up for this decided on this brand, type and size of solder wire. Kester seems to be pretty much the industry standard or there are few others and my experience to date has lived up to those expectations. Through trial and error I have found that my soldering iron was hotter than it should have been, i lowered it a notch and now everything works much better: good solders, the iron tip stays tinned and doesn't oxidize as quickly and doesn't smoke much, at these lower temperatures I kinda find it like the smell of the flux vapor core! If the core flux gets hot enough to burn out, then yes, that acrid smoke is really nasty .
