I bought a box of shorter screws that weren't specifically labeled for joists. I kept hammering them in and never saw any improvement in the squeak, just a few holes. On the advice of a friend, I bought this set and got significantly better results. It's not clear why, but I suspect the extra length was necessary for my floor configuration, and the shorter ones just didn't catch the beam. Unfortunately, the instructions for both this pack and the other were very unclear. Even YouTube videos were pretty limited. There was also a problem that the heads did not always come off. In this case you can use a wrench but be careful as it can leave a bigger mark on the floor or even pull out the screw. A better but less subtle technique is to hit it very hard from the side with a hammer. The head and metal bracket fly through space but leave no trace.
