This camera worked like clockwork the first time I tested it after plugging it in. The instructions may take some work, but it's easy once you understand what all the terms are and what they mean.1. The camera must be powered by 12 volts DC. To do this, you have two main options, depending on the functionality you want. a. If you want the camera to ONLY turn on when the vehicle is reversing, you will need to connect it to the reverse light or additional "reverse signal" wires (IF your vehicle has them, in most cases they don't). Use the reverse lamp positive and negative wires. DO NOT USE THE CHASSIS GROUND. This can lead to "dirty floors" and all sorts of hard-to-diagnose problems. b. If you want the camera to be some kind of security system that turns on when the vehicle is running or in accessory mode (key on but engine not running) you will need to connect the camera to any 12 volt source. The cigarette lighter/accessory socket is a good choice for this as it is 12V, normally isolated from anything sensitive and protected by a fuse. If you like, you can place an ON/OFF switch (toggle, push ON/push OFF, rotary, slider, etc.) in line with the positive or negative wire to turn it on and off. 2. Understand the purpose of the release cable. Most stereo systems/head units with a camera input have a trigger. Applying POSITIVE 12 volts to the trigger tells the main unit that you want the display to turn on and switch to the camera input. This allows you to view the camera image on the screen when reversing your vehicle WITHOUT pressing any buttons on the head unit.3. Knowing this and assuming that 95% of people want to use this as a backup camera, wire it like this: i. Attach the camera to the desired location, connect the RCA cable to the main unit, and connect the shutter release cable to the main unit's shutter release cable.ii. Lay all camera cables to the next reversing light. If you have a sunroof or large vehicle, you may need to extend the cables.ii_b. Some vehicles have a "reverse signal" wire: you can use this instead of connecting to the reverse light as in step ii.iii. Solder the reverse light negative wire to the camera negative (black) wire. Insulate electrically with heat shrink tubing.iv. Solder the reverse light positive wire to the camera positive wire (red) AND the shutter release wire (red). Insulate it with heat shrink tubing.v. Double check for correct connection and polarity (black to negative, red to positive).vi. Test your camera. To do this safely, apply the emergency brake, turn the key to ACC (radio on but no engine), then shift into reverse. The main unit should switch to the camera image and you should be able to see the image on the display.vii. Have fun and be careful!
