I bought this as a dock for my Dell Inspiron 13 Series 7000. It worked exactly as described right out of the box and allowed me to connect an old monitor to the VGA port, my old USB -Keyboard and mouse to the USB port and my CAT5 cable to the Ethernet port. It's very light and small, which means it's portable, which comes in handy if you have a second desktop somewhere. I ended up returning it because it didn't have a power adapter or audio jack, so every time I was at my desk I had to connect 3 cables to my laptop (power cable, speaker cable and this unit). I bought a Dell WD15 which was much more expensive but suited my needs better (audio, ethernet, 3 video options, more USB ports, power supply).
