Because the top of the case covers the holes for the mounting screws when viewed from above. You can't drill straight holes in an aluminum boat without removing the two screws from the bottom of the hull. This will expose the flexible LED strip and the positive and ground connections from the strip to the wire. This connection is VERY fragile, mine broke with very little movement of the wire. I'm sure there is a way to restore that connection, but I didn't want to go through the hassle. When tested prior to installation, the light was bright and I would have been pleased. 2/5 for build quality, but that's what you get for $17.
