Review on Waterfall Filter: Premium GE MWF Compatible Refrigerator Water Filter by Jose Muenzen

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Poor fit and ANSI/NSF standard compared to OEM GE filter

Bought this filter after reading rave reviews. The reviews highlighted two negatives that I wanted to see and test for myself: the fact that this filter is only NSF/ANSI 42 certified (removing just the taste and odor of chlorine) and not Standard 53; cysts, other contaminants) and the fact that when installed it made loud noises and slowed down the flow. So I decided to go ahead and spend $25 knowing that if they turned out to be true I wouldn't buy again and would go back to a more expensive OEM filter. Well I received the filter today and after the initial installation, including filling as suggested on the box (so pour on some tap water before installing) and rinsing, the thing whistled like a steam engine and the flow rate was low. I knew it was an air leak problem so I just used petroleum jelly to coat the rubber o-rings on the filter adapter nipple on the back of the fridge and then screwed it back in and continued flushing and it worked . However, an unnecessary step was already required, so cross out the 1. To verify the NSF/ANSI claims I simply checked the included specification and of course the literature claimed that only the ANSI/NSF 42 standard was approved. I'll be using the filter for a few months but the $15 saved is definitely not worth it given the wasted time and lack of hygiene standards these things are made to. The only reason I gave it 2 stars is because it works.

Pros
  • Very impressive
Cons
  • boring packaging
