Cubic Boron Nitride as specified here is an abrasive almost as good as diamond. It is mainly preferred for high-speed machining because when hot, the diamond's carbon can diffuse into the steel and alter its quality. So why use it here? I think that's the Spyderco philosophy "I'll have everything individually". If there's a material, a mechanism, or a specific use for a knife, they want it. I tried these wands face to face with a diamond. In fact, you use one on each side of the blade. They look exactly the same, but the c-BN appears to be sharper. Even if you slide your finger across the surface, there is a difference. Almost no pressure is required to make it "bite". However, the result looks the same, just with less pressure. C-BN crystals break more easily than diamond, so the lightest print that works is like a ticket. I would expect the difference to be larger with very hard steel like S110V. But I don't have a knife to sharpen, and I don't want to sacrifice a factory blade for my sharpening skills.
