Fair price - flashlights

Well my third Foxelli has finally reached the point of no return. I've had two microprocessor/controller exit failures, both about 6 months old. The first one failed in always-on mode, I couldn't turn it off. The second would get stuck in the off state and occasionally turn on for a few minutes, then either scroll through the settings or just turn off again. Both were replaced under warranty. The third was this model and lasted much longer. Although a major bug was avoided, it's useless now. Battery life dropped to around 30 minutes at the low end, and the headband is too loose and not adjustable. The rubber is just worn out. To be honest, I probably use my headlamp 20-25 hours a week at work and charge it during lunch and after work. Everyone at my job uses a headlamp as much, if not more, than I do. So I feel comfortable making some observations between brands. Nitecore seems to have about the same lifespan, 6 months to a year. Most guys have similar bugs, the microprocessor freezes in some mode or loops. Black Diamond may or may not seem happy, but I have to say that one of the guys running Black Diamond told me he had a hot head. It turned out that his headlight was smoking from the battery compartment. Energizer, Princetontec, and Rayovac are all plastic junk that breaks with normal use. One reason to avoid AAA devices is that the battery door hinges break after a dozen or so battery changes. In this segment, you can hardly avoid junk. The only thing I've seen in 3 years is a phoenix and some handguns. I have a spare pelican that is 6 years old but it is terribly heavy and the tape comes off too when you stand it up. If you hesitate, you really aren't getting much bang for your buck, so spending more won't take much longer. Of course, you can't call it a GOOD product, but the competition is just as bad.

Pros
  • Nice packaging
Cons
  • Something different
