I have used this with my 2015 MacBook Pro which does not have an optical drive. Got it, connected it with the included USB Y-cable and it worked right away. I've just got the MacBook Air M1 I'm upgrading to and it works just as well on it as my old MBP, except in this case I'm using the USB-C connector on the Y-cable. I rarely need such an optical drive, but I can confirm that I can read CDs and DVDs with it and even burn CD-ROMs. And I still haven't had to use the included power cord to do anything. I also like that it's slot-loaded - I find it much more convenient than regular external optical drives that use a tray. And especially for the price, it suits my needs.
