Review on πŸ’Ώ High-Performance SEA TECH Aluminum External USB Blu-Ray Writer Super Drive for Apple MacBook Air, Pro, iMac by Adam Stone

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Works great between my iMac and Macbook Pro (even with Parallels on Windows 8)

After burning about 50-60 DVDs on my 24" iMac the internal superdrive decided to wave the white flag and left. The warranty was up and I still needed something so I could install new software, watch movies or just move things off my computer. Having a broken superdrive was no fun. researched and ended up choosing this one for a number of reasons external device. First and most obvious was that I needed a drive to work with my iMac. I also wanted to start burning Blu-Ray (for backups) and have never been able to do that. The performance and connectivity too Apple products was also a big plus. The look of the drive (brushed aluminum) matched my iMac and Macbook Pro u perfectly nd just seemed like part of my system and not something bought after the fact. Basically I've been using the drive for the past few months with no issues and have plugged and unplugged it on both of my computers with no issues. I also had no problems using my Macbook Pro with Parallels 9 and Windows 8. On the Windows side, the drive is recognized and used equally well. ** Two important points. I hope you already know this: (1) Apple didn't (and never) play Blu-Ray on their computers. That means that if you want to use it to watch Blu-ray on Mac, you need to install "Blu-ray Player" software on your Mac before it can work. This isn't really a problem as there are some free ones that you can get working as well as ones that cost around $20-$30 that work pretty well too. (2) Windows 7 had native support for Blu-Ray, but Windows 8 didn't! If you're either running this on a Windows machine or just running Windows 8 on your Mac (like me) with VMWare or Parallels, you're also in the same boat and need to install "Blu-Ray Player" to detect Blu-ray. If you're not worried about Blu-Ray anyway, that's not even a problem. I just thought I should warn you so you won't be surprised later. Bottom line, the brushed aluminum drive looks gorgeous and should suit any Mac user who thinks about it. It also works as expected and is pretty much a simple plug-and-play device (assuming you've factored in the Blu-ray player issues mentioned above). It works well and looks great.
