Review on Hopkins FloTool 42003MI 16 Quart Container by Jordan Weakland

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Probably should be checked for leaks before use.

Unfortunately I didn't know that Walmart sold it cheaper. I see people complaining that it doesn't pick up oil fast enough and "gurgles". You may not have noticed the small vent. I didn't open it for the first few seconds and the air coming out of the drain hole made the oil squirt a bit. I see people complaining that it seeps out of the drain holes over time. You must understand that these containers are designed to collect oil and you must pour the oil into the appropriate container immediately afterward. Wipe the drain pan before placing it upright. You don't use it to store butter. They don't use it to transport oil. Take the new oil container you just emptied and reuse it for storage/transportation. Pour the remaining new oil into a smaller container if you find it necessary. I see complaints that it splatters and the pan isn't big enough to catch the splatters. If it's splashing because your truck is too high, consider raising the reservoir so the oil doesn't fall so far and cause splashing. I see other complaints that it's too runny. My first thought as I pulled the oil pan out from under the car was that I shouldn't drag it over rough roads. Doing this over and over will end up creating a hole in the container. Flatten the old box and place it underneath. The last complaint I remember is that it leaks at the seams. This is where it can become a real problem. Now that I think about it, I CAN experience it, but I'm not sure. When I removed the oil filter a large amount of oil spilled out and this could be the cause of the small amount of oil I found on the outside of the oil pan OR it could be a seam leak. I'm not sure. An improvement to this design would be to place the drain hole on the side high enough that opening the container during use would prevent the oil from escaping. It can still be pointed to the side, but it needs to be raised so it's over the drain hole in the pan. And obviously, thicker plastic and even thicker leakproof stitching wouldn't hurt.

Pros
  • Elegant design
Cons
  • Repair
